Overview

What Is a Credit Union?

A credit union is a group of people (members) who form around a common bond, like an employer or geographic area. The credit union provides high-quality, low-cost financial products and services to its field of membership.

Volunteers are a big part of any credit union’s success. Members give their time to serve on the board and committees, making important decisions about how their institution operates.
Credit unions exist not for charity, not for profit, but for service.

Our Journey, Your Credit Union

Our Story

In 2020, two not-for-profit financial institutions with a combined 70 years of service to Vermont communities — Members Advantage Community Credit Union and River Valley Credit Union — joined forces to become 802 Credit Union. We chose our new name and emblem to reflect our collective strength and statewide field of membership.

In 2025, 802 Credit Union proudly welcomed White River Credit Union as part of our growing family, further expanding our reach and commitment to serving members throughout central Vermont. Together, we continue to build on our shared legacy of local service, member ownership, and community support — all rooted in the spirit of Vermont.

Today, 802CU serves over 41,000 members at twelve neighborhood branches across Vermont. As a full-service financial cooperative, we are owned and operated by our members, and we pride ourselves on offering a complete array of banking and lending solutions, convenient digital tools, and personalized guidance at every step.

Mission Statement

At 802CU, our commitment is to provide local, personal services that make a positive difference in the lives of our members and our community.

Inclusion Statement

As a Vermont-based organization, we recognize the importance of being unique and we cherish the different perspectives our community offers. We believe that the celebration of our diverse staff and membership make us who we are. 802CU is committed to embracing these differences to strengthen our culture of inclusion.

Core Values

C.O.M.M.I.T. to devote, to perform, to pledge, to execute, for a definite purpose.

Communication

Open and honest lines of communication are a priority. We encourage direct conversations with our supervisors and the CEO for any ideas, questions, or concerns. Only with open communication can we address issues, pursue opportunities, or solve problems. Staff at all levels are encouraged to both give and receive communication in a timely manner.

Our Community

It’s important to us that we have a positive reputation in and impact on the communities that we serve. Through teamwork, involvement, and support, we give back to our communities because we recognize they are why we are successful. We strongly encourage community participation by all employees and volunteers. Each community that we serve is different, and we recognize there are different needs.

Member Focused

We are a member-driven organization that has a long tradition of putting our members first. Every decision and every direction that the Credit Union chooses is influenced first by what is best for the member and the long-term financial stability of the Credit Union. We will act as trusted advisors to our membership, educating them to better their financial lives.

Mutual Respect

The standards by which we measure ourselves are based on how we provide internal and external service. There is a sense of mutual respect at every level and in every relationship with co-workers and members. We consciously make the effort to be understanding toward each other and our members. We have the capacity to put ourselves in another’s position. We make the effort to remove judgment and make no assumptions. We treat others how we wish to be treated.

Integrity

We set a good example and are honest with ourselves and each other. We hold ourselves, each other, and our management team accountable. We do the right thing, whether it’s for the Credit Union, our teammates, or our members. This value is critical to providing confidential, trustworthy service to members and co-workers.

Teamwork

We work together supporting each other to reach the common goals of the organization. No organization can thrive without a positive “can do” attitude. The spirit of the Credit Union is tied to enthusiasm, and we expect this of each and every employee.

More Than a Member

As a member-owner, you’re doing more than banking. You’re building a better financial future with a credit union that puts you first.

Testimonials

Hear from our members!

Real stories from real people.

I recently moved to Vermont and was looking for a new financial institution. Several people recommended 802 Credit Union. Kim helped me set up my accounts, my direct deposit and got me started with online banking. She showed me how to use Bill Pay, which I never used at my previous bank. What a huge convenience! I highly recommend 802 Credit Union and all the staff at the Windsor branch.
